Don't Sit Still

by Teresa Jennings

There's something about pleasant, sunny weather that makes us feel energized, like we just can't sit still. No need to resist, we say! And if the sun isn't actually shining, all the more reason to call on our inner sun to get us up and moving. This happy-go-lucky song is just the ticket to inspire such activity. It's simple and catchy, and practically compels you to join in with the rhythms, even if it's just a shoulder bounce.

You will note that there are claps indicated on the music. These are doubled with electronic claps on the Performance/Accompaniment recording and marry nicely with the drum taps and grooves. They stop during the movement section at measure 18, then resume afterwards heading into either the D.S. or the coda. The pattern repeats exactly except for the ending at measure 41. Let everyone clap along, or choose a group to clap while others sing if it's too challenging to do both.

Don't sit still! - Happily, there are lyrics that include actual movement suggestions like left, right, up, down, front, back, sky, ground, and so on. This also makes for an automatically choreographed opportunity. But just in case you want to get a little help with that, our dance expert, Melissa Schott, has created a movement video for fun and inspiration. Her ideas are suggestions and you are free to alter or adapt any way you like. You can find her video and teaching notes at our web site for free!
