We Got It Done

by Teresa Jennings

This positive and triumphant rock piece can be used for the end of the year, end of the semester, end of testing, graduation, moving on, or any successful effort your students have completed. The lyrics are pretty self-explanatory in their sense of pride and accomplishment. Encourage your singers to really put their feelings into it. Especially where they see accents, have them really punctuate the words.

It isn't often we include an optional kazoo line that is meant to be a serious countermelody. In fact, we're not sure we ever have. But for some reason, this piece seemed to really want this, and it was totally fun to do! Players should keep a straightforward tone and attitude – no silliness. Even the glisses should be played well and together. Rehearsing is a good idea. In case you do not wish to use the kazoos, the line is doubled in the winds on the recording, so it's not lost. We also created a "no kazoo" version which you will find at our web site. We hope you give it a chance though, because it makes the piece unique, and dare we say, cool. In fact, in a performance, have your kazoo players wear dark shades for visual emphasis.

There is also an optional percussion part for cowbell and tambourine if you wish to further enhance the experience. The drums play two whole bars before the first measure to cue players. The part is written out so kids will have to actually read the rhythms, including a change to a halftime groove at the chorus. (If you're inspired, this would make an excellent lesson and chance to discuss what halftime means.) At the end of the song, a simple optional clapping part is added for a nice build to the final measure where singers get to shout, "We got it done!"

You will find the extracted percussion part, the kazoo part, and an alternate "no kazoo" version of the song, at our web site.
