Momma Knows
by Teresa Jennings
Moms and kids alike will enjoy this one. Set in a unique groove that blends various contemporary styles and sounds, it's classy and fun, but actually pretty easy to sing. It even gives you, the music teacher, a chance to do a little work with dynamics. Each time the hook is sung ("Momma knows"), there is a crescendo indicated as the last pitch is held out. In order to have room to crescendo, have singers drop down the dynamic slightly prior to it. This is a nice musical nuance that gives instant gratification with little effort. And it sounds cool.
Obviously, the subject matter lends itself well to performances for Mother's Day. But it is adaptable for other occasions as needed. You could also easily change "Momma" to "Poppa" or "Daddy" for Father's Day.
