We'll Figure It Out
by Mike Wilson
Every day of our lives brings with it obstacles to overcome, problems to work through, issues that shape our general approach to the hurdles we encounter. "We'll Figure It Out" is a character song with a positive message of perseverance and the determination to rise above our difficulty, disadvantage or handicap, rather than simply giving up.
With style and orchestrations reminiscent of the '70s band Chicago, the recording of this song incorporates rhythm and brass sections to create a "feel good" flavor designed to keep your kids' attention. The melody is in unison and, though the rhythms are syncopated, our studio kids caught on quickly, even the youngest ones. The song requires lots of energy and must be sustained throughout for an exciting presentation.
Lyrically, verse one presents the straight-ahead scenario of dealing with a math problem. Verse two is metaphoric, using clouds, sunshine, etc., to represent our struggles and ultimate victories that take place when we "put our heads together" to figure out a way around or through the trouble. As music and poetry rely so heavily on metaphors, a brief discussion might be appropriate. Knowing the true subject of your song makes music more enjoyable. Thinking metaphorically will also serve them well when choosing the music to which they will listen.
