Lazy Lackadaisical Day
by Mike Wilson
The setting: mid morning on a sweltering summer day. Maybe it's in the deep south where Spanish moss is hanging motionless from the trees over a glassy, tranquil river. An old hound dog snoozes on the porch, and a hammock invites some serious daydreaming. "Lazy Lackadaisical Day" is not only the title, it is the approach to this song. Barely two minutes long, the unison melody requires a little stylizing to achieve that laid back summertime feel. A scoop or slur here and there will do the trick. You can use the treatment we gave it, which is a middle of the road measure on the "lazy scale" or take it a bit further with your own ideas. An older group might even try singing behind the beat in places for a fuller effect. Either way, take a very smooth, legato approach and don't let them get too excited. Our arrangement includes a rhythm section and strings, and you'll hear either piano or string instruments covering the melody most of the way through.
