A Song For Grandparents Day
by John Riggio
Okay, I admit it. I was a kid in the 1980s, and though I didn't know it at the time, I heard a lot of David Foster compositions and stylings. This tune has a ballad feel that is not unlike some of those Foster-esque moments I had as a kid.
As the title indicates, this is a song for grandparents, to be sung by their grandchildren, specifically for National Grandparents Day (which falls in September every year, in case you wondered). If your school has an assembly where students get to honor grandparents on their special day, this is a great choice for a musical number. The lyrics are heartfelt, and for inspiration, this writer consulted the highest authority available: my niece, Kailey. She has a great relationship with her grandparents, so I knew if I interviewed her she'd have some good feedback for me.
Of course, this is the kind of song where kids could hand out flowers to their grandparents one at a time as the song progresses. You could also take advantage of the instrumental bars at the end of the song to hold up letters that spell "We Love You Grandma & Grandpa" or other similar sentiments. You could even sing the song, then just play the instrumental track as a backdrop for a longer presentation. You may not have a dry eye in the house, and that's okay.
