Walk!
by David & Anne Ellsworth
Early childhood education is, in part, about repetition for young learners as their abilities to remember are gradually increasing. They also enjoy music that encourages them to move, as controlling gross motor body movements is something they can practice over and over in preparation for the fine motor skills which are increasing as well. With these developmental concepts in mind, the tune "Walk!" is layered with fun, repetitive rhythms, both for instruments and lyrics. Kids love to hear and copy, over and over.
As you would expect, the song invites students to do as the title suggests: Walk! Suggestions for when to walk are written on the music, but you can adapt this any way you like. The lyrics are light and rhythmic with a touch of silliness.
The instrumental element of the song is an alto sax line that repeats a catchy, slurred urban lick throughout. Kids can pretend to play the sax – once you show them what one is and how to "play" it – or do a special move each time the sax plays.
