The Ghoul In School
by David & Anne Ellsworth
If you must have a ghoul at your school, why not invite this friendly, teacher-helping kind to hang around? He bobs down the hall and bounces off of the ceiling during recess, as he's a playful, happy specter after all. But when teacher says it's learning time, he comes down and joins the class. He takes learning time seriously with students, helping them learn and practice new skills in the classroom.
This imagination song for young voices has a simple, yet catchy quarter note rhythm in the verse, describing what a friendly ghoul likes to do in school. The sounds he makes when not talking politely to kids can be heard in the synthetic voicing throughout the song: strange wiggly squeaks that perfectly define his ghouliness.
The chorus of the song uses a repeated syncopation introducing him formally to listeners as the ghoul in school and what his job is in the classroom. Despite any preconceived notions of what a ghoul should be and act like, we are reassured that kindness is the true nature of our floating friend.
The movement suggested in measure 17 says to "thump and stomp." The thumping could be a gentle patsch on the thighs in time, double time, or even offbeats. Stomping can be done to the beat while in one place or doing a walking pattern around the room. Or, just let your ghouls come up with their own interpretations for silly fun.
Let us know how it goes. We love pictures!
