A Candle Glowing In The Window
by Teresa Jennings
Beautiful and hymn-like, this gentle song is a lovely way to showcase your choir during the holiday season or anytime you want to bring the subject of peace to your performances. It begins with an optional solo (sung wonderfully for us by Megan Byers). Parts 2 and 3, which are also optional, enter beneath the solo with light "Ooh's." By the second verse, it blooms into a full 3-part mixed choral piece. It's not particularly long, so learning it will be a little easier, especially for the lower, changing, and changed voices of your part 3 singers. The optional solo returns again at the end to finish it off. Underneath it all, there is an exquisite brass choir led by a sublime solo trumpet (played by Joey Tartell) that comes and goes throughout.
This song will also work in unison, so we have provided an alternate full performance version for you on our web site. You'll also find a full performance 3-part version that does not use a soloist, in case that's helpful. If you have an ambitious or more advanced choir, they may wish to try the tune a cappella. By removing the intro, interludes, and ending, they should be able to do this. We have provided an example of this, also online, as well as a piano only instrumental version and rehearsal tracks for parts 2 and 3. (See details on page 79.)
In performance, the use of battery powered candles or other small lights would be visually striking. Have each singer hold a single candle and dim the overhead lights to emphasis the peaceful nature. (If you're interested, you can find Kandle Lights™ at MusicK8.com)
