What Do You Call Your Grandma/Grandpa?
by Teresa Jennings
If your school is one that celebrates Grandparents Day in September, you're in luck. We have a song that is almost tailor made for them! Or it could be. The song itself is quite easy and kids will enjoy the stylized pop singing along with a hip hop groove underneath. The tricky part starts at measure 13 when the kids take turns speaking the grandparent monikers. It is interspersed with the singing, so they will need to pay attention. Those bits of singing are also divisi (optional), which adds even more challenge, but makes it hip if they can do it.
We have provided a number of common names to use. These may or may not cover the names your own kids use for their grandparents. If not, replace any of them freely. In a performance, having each speaker step forward and say the name to the grandparent in question would be a nice touch.
