Summertime Fun
by Mike Wilson
Surf's up! It's summertime and time to be outside! Here's a Beach Boys-influenced surfer type song to preach that message and get your kids dancing in the aisles. The hooky chorus is easy to learn (and memorize). You'll sing it four times. The form is an easy-to-follow A B A B A A. Take notice of the first ending (measure 30) which is the end of the third chorus heading into the fourth. It can catch you off guard if you're just singing along without thinking. The fourth chorus "takes it home" starting at the second ending, and adding optional divisis in measures 34 and 35. Make sure to observe the dynamics from measure 29 to the end.
Beginning guitarists can surf, too!
If you have any aspiring surfer guitarists, they can play along with this song. The chords are indicated on the music and you only need the first four strings. It is very important that the guitarist only strum those four strings because the X'ed out notes don't go with the chords… well, except for the A chord. You'll see they only play a downstroke on beats two and four for the most part. This allows them time to change chords. Even so, this moves pretty quickly, so they'll need to be on their toes! For easier reading, you will find an extracted guitar part on our web site.
