Pumpkin Puzzler
adapted/arr. Paul Jennings
Variations of this simple movement song, based on "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star," have been popular for over a century. Our adaptation of it is particularly charming, using a lighthearted classical approach that includes harpsichord, strings, and a smattering of winds as a backdrop. The melody states the "puzzle" the first and third times at measure 5, leaving the second time open for movement. (You could also have singers do the movements while they sing the third time if it isn't too difficult for them.) The most fun part is the very end of the song. Be warned though. The temptation to reveal the surprise ending a little early may prove too much for some of your youngsters! The song is ideal for your youngest singers in the fall, but don't let that limit you. It works most any other time of year, too.
We will give you ideas for both smaller movements, (for more confined settings including desks) and bigger movements (where kids can move around more and get down on the floor). Feel free to adapt. The numbers denote the measure numbers.
Movement 1 - Smaller
5 - rub palms together, parallel to the ground, or hold hands to each side, palms flat
7 - make a big circle with arms out in front and to the side
9 - hold one hand as though it holds a seed between two fingers, with the other hand pointing to the space between the fingers
11 - make a great big circle of hands, out to the side and over the head
13 and 15 - repeat 5 and 7
Movement 2 - Larger
5 - squat down, just above the ground, palms flat and parallel to ground
7 - while still squatting, make a big circle with arms out in front of you and to the side
9 - stand, then hold one hand as though it holds a seed between two fingers, with the other hand pointing to the space between the fingers
11 - make a great big circle of hands, out to the side and over the head
13 and 15 - repeat 5 and 7, standing
