Dreams, Dreams
by Teresa Jennings
As we usually do in an all-school revue, we provide at least one song that can be sung by your youngest students. For this revue (Forward), that song is "Dreams, Dreams." In keeping with the theme, the lyrics remind us that we all have dreams, big and small. That's going to be think. After all, who among us has the most vivid imaginations?
The easygoing, retro rock style of this song is light and catchy, and above all, simple. As you can hear on our audio recording, the youngest singers had no trouble with it. The only thing you might need to do is cue them when the ending is coming because it repeats using the same lyrics twice before going to the coda.
You'll note that we also included optional claps, which are notated on the music. As we indicate at the bottom of the first page (p. 21), younger kids might have trouble with singing and clapping simultaneously. If that happens, you can have a group that only claps while another group sings, or just omit the claps entirely.
In a performance, you can emphasize the cute factor by featuring your younger students. Have them front and center, and let older students stand behind them, singing or not. If they do sing, be sure it's more quietly than the young ones so they can be heard. Add a basic right/left sway, with or without the claps, to bring movement to your performance. Stop and start or change action at the bridge for interest. Keep it simple!
This song includes a Diving Deeper Into The Music interactive learning assessment.
