Gratitude

by John Riggio

At Thanksgiving time it's good to be thankful, right? Even in the age of Covid, we have much to be thankful for. Good health, friends, electricity, indoor plumbing(!), freedom, parents, weekends, pets, opportunity to get an education, the ability to read, sunshine, a brain, a heart, a home, da nerve! The more grateful we are, the happier we are. This song reminds us that it's good to be thankful, even if we have to put some thought into what we're thankful for. Gratitude changes us for the better, and when we're changed, the world changes.

While the verses are pretty straightforward to sing, the chorus has some challenges in terms of rhythm (lots of syncopation) and moving between pitches, but when your performers hear the fruits of their labor it will be well worth it! To help with the melody, it's covered in the piano and an electric piano part. In the studio our singers really enjoyed this song, not only for its positive message but for its soaring, hook-laden chorus. (Although one of our singers thought we should have included "cake" earlier in the list of things to be thankful for…)
