I Love A Baseball Game
by Mike Wilson
For many of us, the one thing that best ushers in the spring is baseball. The leathery smell of the ball, or your glove as you bury your face in it for the first time, just brings an automatic smile. The green grass, a sun-shiny deep blue sky, the sounds, the smells – they're intoxicating and scream "It's spring!" That's the spirit we try to capture with "I Love A Baseball Game."
Whether you're talking Little League or high school, minor league or major league, this is a one-size-fits-all, happy and energetic song. We take an Americana-ish, rock 'n' roll approach with standard instruments of the genre.
We start out with a chorus. Forte right out of the gate, and keep that energy throughout. If you listen to the demo singers, you'll hear that the energy is obtained by accenting the first syllable of many of the words. It's crucial to the performance. Punctuated with handclaps, we trade back and forth between chorus and verse and end with an enthusiastic shout of "Play ball!" Also during the chorus, the line "Batter batter! Hey, batter batter!" breaks into two parts each time. It's optional to add the second part, but it's so natural and fun, you will want to include it. At measure 56, the entire audience (or stadium) is invited to sing along, which we did on our recording. It was a blast!
As a lifelong lover of baseball, this author was taken aback that many of our studio singers knew very little about the game and the rules. What an excellent opportunity for you to go all cross curricular on your students and explain, or have some of your experts explain the basics of the game, and clarify the terms used in the song.
