My Waffles
by Tom & Lynn Crowell
Making waffles from scratch has become a tradition in Tom and Lynn's house. They help each other make the batter, cook them, and then put on different toppings. As they say in their song, the fun part is the variety of toppings you can use, depending on your mood. You can be creative, and try different flavors. For them, it's their special family time. Even the dogs help.
The song is a fun mid-tempo pop song with easier rhythms. Please note that syncopated rhythms pop up here and there in the verses and chorus. It gives the song a playful bounce. There is also a long stretch of words in the bridge where it lists the variety of toppings. Make sure your students take a good breath and are ready to enunciate before diving into that section. If inspiration strikes, have your students change up the lyrics to incorporate the toppings they like. Or see how many different toppings they can come up with. They can be serious or silly. (Rutabaga waffles anyone? Hey, some of us thought fried chicken waffles were weird, but apparently that's really a thing!)
