Pumpkin Spice
by Teresa Jennings
Every year as the weather starts to feel a little autumnal, we start to see more and more hints of that well-known seasonal favorite, pumpkin spice. Or is it a favorite? The further into the fall we get, the more it appears to be ubiquitous. It's especially common in coffee, tea, cookies, breads, muffins, and cakes. All of them. Everywhere. Is this a good thing or a bad thing? Depends on who you ask!
This lighthearted song looks into the subject, delivering both points of view in the form of a partner song. The first time through, the pros take the stand, obviously enjoying the abundance of pumpkin spice. The second time, the cons take over, complaining that it's just too much! The third time, the two combine with a nifty counterpoint to each other. The "winner" (if there is one) is yet to be determined, but your kids will have a fun time with the opposing musical perspectives.
The style of the tune is slightly quirky with harpsichord, soprano sax, bass clarinet, and other unique instruments adding to the "flavor" of the season. The two melodies are not particularly difficult by themselves. But putting them together will keep singers on their toes for sure. Part 1 is sung fairly normally, with a straightforward happy attitude. Part 2 is sung with a bit of comedic despair, including glisses, accents, and spoken commentary. Allow your kids to ham it up a little, but not so much that it interferes with the result.
As if the topic and opposing points of view weren't enough, we have added additional ukuleles and Boomwhackers® to the accompaniment. Both of these are optional, and you could do one without the other if you choose. It's probably best to have these parts played by kids who are not singing. You will find the parts for these at our web site.
