It's Great To Be A Kid At Christmas Time
by John Riggio
What a great song to sing during the Christmas season! "It's Great To Be A Kid At Christmas Time" is a happy, joyous, fun song that will appeal to adults remembering a time when they were kids and all the fun they had during the season, and it will also appeal to kids because they're currently experiencing it! In fact, when John mentioned the title of this song to his niece (now a college student), she was like "Yep! It really is!" This song has a great hook and a happy shuffle beat with jingle bells helping to keep the groove. What's not to love?
About the vocals: In order for John to say the things he wanted to say in this tune (it's autobiographical!), the verses are wordy, which makes finding a place to breathe challenging from bar 7 to 14. There are a few solutions. Singers could breathe at the rest in bar 9, though at this tempo it might not seem natural to some. Alternately, singers could really tank up (big breath) at the rest in bar 7 to carry them all the way to bar 14. And of course, your singers can stagger-breathe the melody. We used a combination of all these techniques with our singers.
At bar 40 the band stops and singers are a cappella for one bar (two bars if you don't include the drum fill). Sing this with confidence! It's a showy part of the tune for your students, so you want them to really shine there.
