Cozy

by Teresa Jennings

Picture this: a winter's morning, cold and crisp outside, toasty warm inside. Perhaps snow is falling, rendering the world silent and picturesque through a frosty window. From your favorite chair where you sit with your legs curled up, to your cup of cocoa beside you, you feel it. This is cozy. Likewise, the song, "Cozy" paints a musical picture of this same feeling – from warm socks to a cuddly puppy to a mother's loving hug. You can see it all in your mind's eye, can't you? Are you smiling yet?

The song is set in a gentle country pop style, allowing singers to perform in a more casual manner. The verse is sung at mezzo forte so that you can include a crescendo into the chorus at measure 25 where it becomes forte. At measure 33, it comes down to mezzo forte again for just a few bars, allowing for a moment of reverence during the lyrics there, then back to forte to finish the chorus, ending with a decrescendo back to mezzo forte. Be sure singers watch your cues for the dynamic shifts.

While this piece works nicely in unison, we have included a second part throughout, and a third treble part that enters at the chorus. These are optional, but might make the song even more appealing to your older singers. Plus it's just really beautiful. If you wish to use any of these options, we have included extra audio versions to help you. Parts 2 and 3 are isolated for rehearsing, there is a full unison version, and we have even given you an a cappella version so you can hear how neat the voices sound together. As a special treat, we also created a solo version featuring Melissa Schott. No stranger to country music, her rendition is gently stylized so that your own soloist might find inspiration. Or, like us, you could just listen to her for the sheer pleasure of it.
