Reindeer Parade
by Teresa Jennings
When reindeer participate in a parade, it seems reasonable they would choose to move to a hip hop beat. But the question is, do they march or do they fly? In this simple song, it would appear they get to do both. (And there are cool flying sound effects to prove it!)
During the verse, singers and percussionists alternate in a call and response sort of way. At the chorus, they join together. At first, percussion can be rhythm sticks, wood blocks, small drums with sticks, or anything you happen to have that makes an unpitched tap. Then, when the singers talk about the jingles, percussionists play jingle bells. The two types of percussion join together rhythmically at the chorus. Optional claps are also indicated at this point. We did not record those however, as we wished to keep the focus on the percussion, but you certainly can add them. While the percussion lines are on the piano/vocal, we have extracted parts for ease of use and put them on our web site.
In performance, let all or some of your students wear reindeer antlers, or whole costumes if you're inspired. Antlers, at least, are easily found, or you could make your own and embellish freely. (We wrote a whole musical about this, by the way. It's called Antlers. Check it out!)
