Mom, I Love You
by Teresa Jennings
Whether you use this piece to honor your moms on Mother's Day or any other day, it's bound to give them a warm feeling when they hear it. What mom doesn't want to hear her kids say, "I love you"? In this sweet song, they say it, or rather, sing it quite a bit.
Written simply enough to be used by your younger singers, this gentle piece is also flexible enough to work with older students. For one thing, it is a round, though even that could be optional if you just want to make it a unison song for your youngest. For another, it includes some optional percussion – hand drum and triangle or antique cymbal. While we label the percussion in the singular, you could certainly have multiple players do both parts. Finger cymbals are also fine to use instead of antique cymbals. There is a spoken count-off at the beginning of the recording for the entrance of the hand drum prior to measure 1. We have also created an extracted part for the percussion which you can find at our web site.
The alto recorder you hear on the recording is not necessarily meant to be a student part as it is somewhat difficult. However, if you have someone who is capable of playing it, all they really need to do is follow along with the vocal melody, reading the notes up an octave. Or an accomplished soprano recorder player could also try, but in the same octave as the vocal line. And actually, any C instrument could do likewise. This would be especially nice if you decide to perform the piece with live accompaniment, which should be easy enough to do.
It probably goes without saying, but we'll say it anyway: This song is equally usable for Father's Day or any celebration of or focus on dads. Just switch out the lyrics accordingly.
