Get Out And Vote

by Teresa Jennings

One of our most significant rights is the right to vote. So many have suffered, fought, and died to earn and preserve this right. Why then would anyone not do it? The only way a democratic government can be truly representative of the people, by the people, and for the people, is if the people use their voice. This impactful song reminds and encourages that fact.

Designed to be part of the revue, Our Constitution, the song stands on its own, especially during times of elections. The driving rock beat coupled with patriotic brass and drums evoke a sense of duty to singers and listeners alike. The melody is simple and repetitive enough for singers of most ages. There is an optional second part that enters on the D.S. as a sort of call and response for a couple of bars. Note that as students sing the words, "vote, get out and vote," there is a certain punctuation in the performance on the recording for emphasis. A slight space between the words (notated with rests) helps produce the effect. A similar spot occurs in measures 24-25.

The bridge of the song is marked with dynamic contrast, starting at piano and increasing to mezzo piano, mezzo forte, and finally forte. It's a nice build that emphasizes the lyrics. Despite the reduced volume, be sure singers put in the accents.

There is an isolated rehearsal track for part 2 available for this song.
