Christmas Cookies
by Teresa Jennings
Believe it or not, we have never written a song about Christmas cookies before. I know, right? We're in our 35th year, and you'd think we had by now! But fear not. We have one now! And it's a goodie.
Bouncy, merry, jolly, upbeat – this song is all the things you'd expect to hear in a Christmas song for kids. And the topic couldn't be more perfect for your holiday programming or just to enjoy in the classroom. Reminiscent of older, more traditional Christmas songs, it's simple, light, and memorable so that everyone from your youngest singers to your audience can sing along! During the bridge of the song we have named several different types of cookies, but feel free to substitute any that mean more to your students. (And by the way, we do actually have a song about pfeffernusse. It was published in Music K-8, Vol. 34, No. 2. It's a hoot!)
To make it even more special, we have included an optional part for bells. It's mostly half notes, mostly two bells at a time, but you can adapt however you like. It definitely adds to the "Christmas-ness" of the song if you can pull it off. There is an isolated PDF of the bells part online that you can duplicate freely for your players.
The second time through the song at the D.S., you will note that kids do not sing, but rather whistle the melody until the bridge (bar 13). This is also optional, but it sure is fun to do! Also a great time to invite the audience to join in. Plus, the bells are more audible during the whistling, giving those players a moment to shine as well.
