Opus 1 For Boomwhackers & Friends

by Teresa Jennings

This feature is specifically written for Boomwhackers® (BW) and includes two different parts for them. BW 1 is the easier part and uses only the note D. BW 2 is a little more challenging and uses C, E, F, G, A, B and C'. It also has some doubled notes, so players will need to focus. But neither part has anything more difficult rhythmically than a quarter note.

There are several other parts (the "Friends" alluded to in the title), all of which are optional, but add a lot if you can use them. These include claps, patsches (thigh slaps), rhythm sticks, and cowbells. You can substitute other instruments for any of these. The BW part is doubled in the piano and it, too, could be played on other instruments such as marimba, xylophone, or even bells. Make sure players pay attention to when their part plays. They will need to count carefully. For ease of use and duplication, you will find extracted parts for the players on our web site.

Set to a light rock groove and very sparse accompaniment, this piece could actually be performed without the recording, too. In which case you could do it slower or faster, or change the form. If you do use the recording, be sure players listen to the 4 taps and drum set-up prior to the first measure so that they come in right on beat 1 of the first bar.
