Earth's Harmony

by Karl Hitzemann

"Earth's Harmony" is a pensive and reflective song about our delicate planet. It would be a natural for performing on or around Earth Day, which is celebrated every April 22, but you could use it for any performance you like since it does not specifically say anything about Earth Day. This 2-part piece will also provide your choir with a nice choral challenge as it will take some practice to get it just right. By the way, to help your singers learn the second vocal part, there is an isolated rehearsal track available on our web site.

The lyrics speak of Earth's many wonderful qualities and of the importance to cherish and protect those qualities. And while the word "harmony" is referring to a balance of nature and a peaceful coexistence with the Earth, you can also draw attention to the fact that your choir will also be singing in harmony. As a matter of fact, the second part begins at bar 20 with the lyrics, "That's Earth's harmony." Of course, part 2 is optional, and this piece would work nicely in unison as well.

The recorded accompaniment for this song is really beautiful, featuring a piano, nylon guitar, fretless bass, strings, winds, and shimmering percussion (suspended cymbal, winds chimes, and a bell tree). And while singing with the recorded tracks would sound wonderful, this is one of those cases where playing the provided piano part live with your singers would sound great, too. You could even add some other instruments if you have them available.

As always, when it comes to celebrating Earth Day or just discussing environmental issues, we recommend that you let classroom teachers know you have resources to help bring the topic across the curriculum.
