What If Every Snowflake Had A Light?

by Teresa Jennings

Here's a song that's pure imagination. Can you just see it? What if every snowflake did have a light? Wouldn't it be just beautiful, magical, and peaceful? Not to mention, bright. This sweet and gentle song gives your young singers the opportunity to explore the possibility of what such a thing might be like. It's also an exceptional way to create an "aww" factor in a performance.

The first vocal entrance is an optional solo. But as you can hear on the recording, it's very nice and worthwhile if you have a singer who is capable. Don't worry so much about perfection. Let it be young and innocent. That is part of the charm. The rest of the group enters at measure 9 and continues until the end where the solo resumes as you like.

We are fond of the orchestration of this piece on the recording and encourage you to listen to it. However, note that the piano part is written in such a way that it could be used in a live performance. It's not that difficult, and it would give you options for tempo and ritards, if that's helpful.

In a performance setting you might include lots and lots of snowflakes as part of your backdrop. These could be big, small, or whatever, ideally created by your students. Perhaps your art teacher can assist with this, even asking other classes to help. Hang their creations all around and mix in strings of white lights to demonstrate the fantasy. Alternately, just using many white lights would be a reasonable substitute.
