Christmas At Home
by John Riggio
"Christmas At Home" is essentially based on a true story. No, really! It comes from experiences John had growing up, including a poignant time when he walked home from a Christmas church service one night to find his sister Teresa waiting for him in a rocking chair by the fireplace. It also touches on the traditions of Christmas in the Riggio household – lots of family, presents, food, music, and yes, Christmas specials on the TV. It's a downright idyllic set of memories. We think maybe Andy Williams was right – it really is the most wonderful time of the year. Perhaps your students have similar memories that they hold dear, and the Christmases of today will be fond memories for them in the future. Use this as an opportunity to allow them to share some of their own special holiday memories or traditions. Include your own, if it feels right.
There is a simple accompaniment for this song – our rhythm section (guitar, bass, drums) plus mandolin. Of course, what Christmas song would be complete without jingle bells? We have included a synth bell guide melody, though parts of the melody are covered on the piano as well. The mezzo forte/forte indication at measure 9 just means the song is mezzo forte the first time and forte on the repeat. Be sure to honor the dynamics at 63, where the song gets softer.
In performance, this song lends itself well to winter and/or holiday costumes, props, and decorations. Since it is a slow and lovely song, consider adding battery powered candles to sway with as well. (Yes, we have those at MusicK8.com Just look for Kandle Lights™ in our "All Products" search box.)
