I Wouldn't Be Me

by Dan Thieman

On its surface, this is a happy tune about imagining what it could be like to be something else, but it also holds a deeper, more meaningful message about self-esteem, self-worth, and the importance of making sure we realize how special each of us actually is. We're all unique, we all matter, and we all have value. This song is a reminder to appreciate being you, just the way you are. Feel free to teach it without any explanation of the deeper message if you don't have the time or you'd rather not get into that with your students. It's catchy and fun to sing, and the deeper meaning might find a way to sink in anyway – kids are pretty intuitive.

Another way to use this song could be from a purely scientific perspective. How is it that we perceive the world around us? What are the five senses? Do clouds, trees, rain, or the sun have the ability to sense? Specifically, which senses are referred to in each verse?

While the song will be most fitting for younger singers, your older students might enjoy it, too. The eighth notes swing, and there are some syncopations, but the accompaniment reinforces the melody throughout. We're confident your singers will easily catch on after hearing our recording a few times.
