If Just One Heart

adapted/arr. Mike Wilson

"If Just One Heart" is a new lyrical adaptation of the traditional British melody "O Waly, Waly." This melody dates back to the early 1700s and has been presented in many forms and lyric settings over the centuries. Best, and most recently known as "The Water Is Wide," it has been featured in multiple movies, recordings, and in theater. We have taken a sensitive and poetic approach with these new lyrics, inviting contemplation and reflection.

This instrumental arrangement finds its roots in folk and bluegrass. A harmonica, dobro, and accordion fill the spaces between phrases as traditional acoustic guitars, mandolin, bass, and piano lay the foundation.

The part 1 melody can be used, optionally, for a unison choir but, as the subject matter is more mature, you will likely want to use the 2-part setting with your older choirs. Part 1 is low in the range and should be relaxed, not pushed. Part 2 lives above part 1 and reaches to a D# on the high end after the key change. Yes, we have a modulation after verse two, so lay for that B7 chord in the second ending to help you feel the center of the new key of E. The challenge will be to sing the part 2 upper ranges in head voice, providing enough support to reach the pitch yet without overpowering part 1. Use this song to teach your choirs it's about making beautiful music, not just singing the notes.

A rehearsal track for part 2 can be found at our web site.
