My School
by Teresa Jennings
Many of our subscribers have asked us for a simple, all-purpose school song, so here it is. The hip-hop style is played by drums and bass on the P/A cassette. You could readily perform the piece without the cassette however, since there is a constant clapping/patsching pattern the kids perform themselves. Just remind them that their eighth notes should be swung for the hip-hop feel.
After the 4th time through the sung section, have your students yell out the name of their school rhythmically. As an example, we had our kids shout, "Washington School!" This could have also been just "Washington!" If your school name is long, consider starting to shout it sooner or abbreviating it to fit. Or, you might shout the name of the school team or the town the school is in. Even the school colors are acceptable. This is, after all, kind of a school cheer. You might even suggest it be used by the student body for pep rallies and such.
