Young and Old
by Teresa Jennings
Also the result of requests from teachers, this Latin jazz song is a light and functional piece to use with groups of varying ages. The chorus is simple, starting with a call and response, and going into a quarter note based verse. It repeats exactly, so even your youngest singers will be able to participate. At the D.S., there is a flute solo during which you may add your own percussion, if you wish. Pick easy instruments and repetitive rhythms, and keep them in until the end of the song.
Consider using the song with classes of varying ages, alternating which group calls and which responds. Or use it as an audience participation song, letting the students call and the audience respond. If your classes visit senior residences, it might also be appropriate to use there.
