The Heart Of America
by Teresa Jennings
We have a real good feeling about this song. It's catchy, light, fun, easy, and it's about a topic near and dear to our hearts (so to speak). With the latest batch of elections soon and recently upon us (depending on when you're reading this), we figured it was time to publish another new happy and upbeat patriotic piece.
On the recording, we chose to feature a soloist (Missy Schott) the first time through the tune, including the chorus. You don't have to use a soloist, or you could use more than one, alternating them throughout the song. A unison performance with the choir will certainly work, too.
The recording of this piece is particularly nice. It's got a very comfortable blend of textures, including fiddle, penny whistle, and lots of different guitars. At the beginning and end, you'll also hear a hand drum and some down-home foot stomps. Feel free to play along or stomp along!
We have also suggested some movement ideas. During the chorus, you will note the words "hand on heart" and "salute." Hold these respective poses for the entire measure in which they occur for the best effect. Decide exactly how you will have your students salute beforehand (there are variations, as you know).
