Orion's Belt
by M.C. Handel
We think your recorder students will be very proud of themselves when they master this spacey duet. We crafted the piece to allow part 1 to play the familiar higher notes G, A, B, C, and D. Both parts mix rhythms and intervals using nothing faster than eighth notes. Part 2 is for your more advanced players as it uses F natural, as well as low D and C. If it is too difficult, have them play part 1 notes as needed. If the low Cs are the only challenge, let them play Fs instead. Adjust the lengths of the sustained notes if they seem too long for your players.
Be sure part 2 players know that they are playing an advanced part. It will add to their sense of accomplishment.
Tie the title in to your cross curricular studies, if you have time. What is Orion's Belt? Where is it? Can students recognize Orion in the night sky?
