Down At The Beach
by Teresa Jennings
Here's a song that's perfect for your beach party tribute or any time you just want to have some fun! Set in a retro rock 'n' roll style, it will definitely inspire your kids to get up and move. The words (dance, swim, play) are cues for them to do what they are singing about. Of course, they are probably not really at a beach, so their imaginations will have to lock in, too. Movements can be free style or choreographed, whichever works best for you.
During the third time through the song, there is a guitar solo (played by guess who...). Students could continue with movements as they have been. Or you could have them stage a little game tossing a beach ball around. Or playing pretend volleyball. Or any other similar beach type activity.
Be sure to use plenty of beach props, too. Beach towels and blankets, sand umbrellas, buckets and shovels for making sand castles - that sort of thing. A big yellow sun on the wall or hanging from the ceiling would be fun as well. Let kids dress in summer beach outfits - colorful and lightweight. And don't forget the sunglasses! You might prefer to avoid bathing suits, however, unless you want to discuss a particular dress code beforehand.
You will note that there is clapping indicated on the music. This is optional, but it's also fun to do. Perhaps some students could clap while others dance, etc. Then let them alternate. Stop and start the clapping as you wish to fit the actions. Adapting our suggested patterns is also just fine.
