Right Side, Left Side
by Teresa Jennings
This simple rap piece should help your students learn and remember which side is their right and which is their left. The premise is that once you know which hand you use to write or draw, you will always have that reference "handy" (so to speak). Any time you forget, just pick up a pencil to write and you'll immediately know which side is which. (Truly ambidextrous people are uncommon. This technique should work for most.)
We have suggested in the song that students use a pencil as a prop to help them learn. (Obviously, you'll need paper, too.) They pick it up, write with it, bounce it to the beat, hold it in each hand separately and then together, etc. You can eliminate any of the movement, except using the pencil to write with, if you prefer. And do be aware that pencils should be handled with caution, as they are pointed. You could also substitute a crayon or other writing implement that is equally blunt.
