Someone's Knockin' At My Door
by Mike Wilson
This cheery little ditty is a great icebreaker for the beginning of the year, the day, or just one class. It is set in a light swing style, which means that once again, the eighth notes are triplet based. The singers and the background instrumentals on the recording offer a good example to follow.
This tune is a partner song, which means that it has two independent melodies that work together when combined. The first melody is sung the first time, the second melody is sung the second time, and both melodies are sung the third time. Feel free to let singers stylize the music with their own nuances, such as scoops, etc. Also be sure to let your spoken soloists have fun saying "It's me!" in a joyful way.
This song lends itself well to some simple actions. For example, have some students knock on a door (real or otherwise) each time it's mentioned. Or just have someone tap on something out of sight. Have others cup their ears to hear the knocking. For "Come in," have them scoop their hands and arms toward themselves in a classic gesture of welcome. A wave or handshake for "Good to see you, my old friend" would also work.
