I Like The Colors Of The Fall
by Teresa Jennings
Of all the autumn-esque songs we've ever published, this has to be one of our favorites. Though it is quite simple, it's also very cute and funny. The key to a successful performance is finding just the right kid to do the spoken parts. In our case, it was Celia Ellsworth. As you can hear, she did a terrific job. Let your soloist listen to her and borrow any inflections, etc., that work. (Her performance reminded us not just a little bit of Lucy from the Peanuts® comic strip and cartoon. Classic.)
The real humor comes from the contrast between the oblivious singers and the commentator. They are blithely adoring the colors of the fall, no matter how frustrated the speaker gets. Your challenge may be getting them to continue singing without giggling! If they do, so be it. The song should be fun.
Timing is also something to be mindful of. Most young speakers may want to rush. Tell yours to take a deep breath and pace her phrases with the music. Again, listening to Celia should help.
On the recording, we left in the footsteps and slamming door at the end. If you would rather do your own, just stop the recording right after the music. Let your speaker come up with her/his own "exasperation sound" at the end, if you wish.
