Snack Time
by David & Anne Ellsworth
Snack time in your classroom is a life skills opportunity for your younger students. Washing hands, taking turns, and good food choices are not only part of this opportunity, they're part of the song, "Snack Time," too. Verse one lists what your class may need to do to get ready for snacks. Verse two suggests some healthy choices. If you have any students who have an allergy to peanuts, you might feel more comfortable substituting different lyrics for "peanut butter honey mix." For example, you could say, "cheesy cubes and crunchy fish." Or how about "apples and granola mix"? Coming up with your own snacks with the kids for this whole part of the song is also encouraged.
The song is sort of a start to finish event. Cleaning up before, snack choices, cleaning up after. After preparation, the kids sing, "I am hungry now!" at the end of the chorus. After eating, they sing, "I'm not hungry now!" in the same place the second time. A little emphasis on this from the start will help your class get it right.
