I have found that Board Races are a great way to see who really knows their notes, rests, etc.
I send four to five students to the board at a time. (I divide the board with vertical lines ahead of time so everyone gets equal space at the board.) I name three successive theory notes, rests, or symbols. For example:
Quarter noteWhole rest
Fermata
As quickly as they can, the students draw the theory notes, rests, or symbols on the board. As soon as I check for accuracy, I tap them on the head and say, "Erase!" (There's always lots of excitement!) It's a great way for me to help those struggling and to see those who really "get" it.
