Here's another way to teach the Kodály hand signs. Think of a house with a basement. (Floridians can do that although we surely don't have many basements around here.)
sol = walls to the house
mi = the floors
(Sometimes I sing, "wall, wall, floor, floor" instead of SM just to help them integrate the ideas.)
la = the roof
re = the stairs going down to the basement
do = the basement - Rock bottom!
From the bottom:
do = basement
re = stairs leading to basement
mi = floor
fa = standing and pointing to the floor
sol = wall
la = roof
ti = smoke coming out of the chimney
do = the clouds above
