I adapted my introduction to tambourines, boxes, yogurt pots, maracas (and anything else that could be shaken to the beat) for my severely educationally handicapped students. They all sort of knew "The Hokey Pokey," so I called the song "The Shakey Shakey." We worked on doing the song's movements (i.e., right and left, up and down, turning around, etc.) to the beat.
You put your right shakey in.
You put your right shakey out.
You put your right shakey in,
and you shake it all about.
You do the shakey, shakey and you turn yourself around,
...that's what it's all about.
We did: right/left, high/low, and front/behind. It was a real hit; the kids want to do it again!
