I like to have the children enter to some fun holiday music. They come from the back of the auditorium, walk through the audience, and step up onto the stage. The students wave, greet, and smile. They continue to enjoy this fun beginning until the entire school (our school has approximately 135 students) is on the stage. It seems to set them AND ME at ease. I have used various music for the entrance, but this year I wanted to use Mannheim Steamroller's "Good King Wenceslas" from their first Christmas album. I wrote to them and asked permission, and they very graciously granted that permission in written form. I love using their music as it sets such a festive atmosphere!
Another thing I do is have an art contest on the face of my program. The students may submit one drawing, and then the teachers vote "blindly," using only numbers to identify the artist. I am the only one who knows the identity of the artists, and I don't vote. It is exciting to look forward to this each year and another way to allow the students to use their creativity.
