I have always tested by allowing 3-5 students to play together at a time (that's all my ears can hear separately for error detection). The others are to be practicing silently as their turn could be next! I go around the room and test starting with all who want to test for white belt. Then all who passed white, either today or previously, may then test for yellow, then we move "up the ladder" until nobody is prepared to go higher. Then if there's more time, we go back and start again and try to get more people to pass and move up the ladder again.
