We have had so much fun with "Shakey, Shakey Egg" (from Music K-8, Vol. 17, No. 4). I've been doing this with K and 1st graders. We use our Heart Chart (Laurie Zentz) with beat and beat-and --> quarter and two eighth notes. I create four 4 measure patterns on the chart. I speak and point to one line and they echo. We do this though all four lines of rhythm. There is time for this in the middle of the song along with a little extra time for what I call, "Free Shake!" You cando the same thing by writing rhythms on the board.
It looks and sounds like this:
Q Q EE Q
Egg Egg Shakey Egg
EE Q EE Q
Shakey Egg Shakey Egg
EE EE EE G
Shakey Shakey Shakey Egg
EE Q EE Q
Shakey Egg Shakey Egg
At the beginning... we free shake. As we sing, we move side to side while shaking to the beat. You can go through the rhythm echoing pattern at the end of the song again until the last line when it is cut a little short. We just do the last line together and then finish the song. Fun!
