To help the students stay quiet while in line (especially when their teacher is running late), I ask them to make sure they have their mouths off and their ears on to see if they can hear my "magic" tuning fork. I simply hit the tuning fork on my knee and then bring it by each student's ear who is standing quietly. They don't want to miss out, so the room gets very quiet very quickly. They now always ask me to "check to see if their ears are on."
It is a simple idea, but sometimes simple is better!
