Use broom sticks, etc. Make horses' heads out of brown construction paper - the kind that is on the big roll most schools have. Cut two horse heads (mane included) and add features with black marker. Staple both sides together, leaving bottom open. Stuff with newspaper for a 3D look. Attach to broom stick with yarn. (Punch holes in the neck so you can wrap the yarn through the neck and around the pole.) For more strength, you can laminate the two pieces after you have drawn on them and before you staple them together.
These look just adorable. They can be made in any color. I also used this idea for the camels for the Three Kings when we did "Los Tres Santos." Very effective and cheap! - Dianne Park
I made 22 stick horses last weekend. Now, they aren't the finest lookin' horses in the world, but my K/1st's loved them!
I spent all last week and weekend looking for stick horses, but they were either too expensive or the cheap ones were sold out. I finally went to Home Depot and bought 10' 3/4" pvc pipe. It was the cheaper 200 psi - $1.13 each. I cut these in 30" lengths with a pvc cutter. I cut 4" pieces for the heads and put them together with elbow connectors - $2.10 for a bag of 10. I bought two rolls of duct tape - one tan and one black. I wrapped the head section with the colored tape and then hot glued some felt ears. I added some googly eyes and that's it! It took about two hours to make 22 horses. I still have enough stuff to make about 10 more horses, and I spent around $22. - Lee Cain
