When I am beginning a rehearsal where the kids come in "wound-up" (practically every day), I play the "mirror game" with them. All I do is stand in front of them and move (usually with a beat) while they become my "mirror image." They are not allowed to talk or giggle during this activity (because mirrors don't talk).
I also extend this by having them "echo" my body movement. For example, I may tap my shoulders four times and move to another action while they are performing the previous action.
This activity forces a lot of concentration and immediately gets them focused and ready to work together.
I also have the kids be the leaders every now and then... they love it!
