One thing I have done for Veterans Day is to have local members of the VFW come to the school assembly and show the Flag Folding ceremony. For each of the thirteen folds as they fold the flag there is a meaning.
We had this on our 9-11 assembly. Our high school students were motionless - it was as if they were not even breathing. Very respectful of the rather older veteran. We adults were so impressed by the student body. Anyway, it is a ceremony that most are not familiar with and does not take a lot of time.
