When I play "pumpkin stew" with K's and 1sts, I place a variety of small percussion instruments around the "stew pot" - usually an upside classroom Orff timpani. The children are seated in a circle, and when they think of a "food" item that they want to place in the pot, they walk up to the drum, choose a favorite instrument that they have (or haven't and wanted to) played and "grind, chop, puree, stir, blend, etc. their sound/food into the pot!" Then we all sing the refrain after every 4th turn or so... It seems to also lay a beginning foundation for RONDO form for later on.
