I have made some heavy duty cardboard tube drums which may be used like bongos. The tubes mostly came from laminate machine film centers. They are about three feet long and two - three inches in diameter, so I cut some in half and some into one- and two-thrids. I then used parcel tape over one end in a star pattern and made four tight layers for the drum head. I quickly put duct tape around to hold the parcel tape secure. So that I would be able to put instruments inside the tubes for portability, I put a sprinkling of talcum powder into the tubes and "sloshed" it around so that the inside no longer was sticky. They sound great!
